Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Here at My Rehab Co in Currumbin, we use Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) as part of tailored rehabilitation programs to restore muscle function, improve mobility, and support recovery after injury or surgery.

NMES delivers gentle, controlled electrical impulses that activate weak or inactive muscles. This stimulation helps rebuild strength, enhance circulation, and improve neuromuscular control. It is especially beneficial after periods of immobilisation, following surgery, or when muscles have weakened due to injury.

The NMES device sends safe, low-level electrical currents through surface electrodes placed on the skin. These impulses cause the targeted muscles to contract, replicating the effects of natural movement. As a result, the treatment helps prevent muscle atrophy, improves range of motion, and restores motor control in areas affected by weakness or dysfunction.

Unlike normal voluntary muscle contractions, which activate smaller Type 1 fibres first, NMES stimulates the larger and more superficial Type 2 muscle fibres initially. This unique recruitment pattern accelerates strength gains and shortens rehabilitation times. In addition, it enhances coordination and helps retrain the nervous system for better long-term outcomes.

Since introducing NMES at our clinic, our practitioners have seen excellent results in patients recovering from acute sporting injuries and post-operative orthopaedic procedures. When combined with evidence-based osteopathic care and structured exercise rehabilitation, NMES provides an effective pathway to regain strength and return to activity faster.

This advanced therapy is safe, well-researched, and clinically proven to support your recovery — helping you get back to doing what you love, sooner.
